About Birds Birding Trips Blogging Conservation Destinations Inspiration Reviews Contact Birding White-winged Black Terns and Whiskered Terns near Broome April 30, 2023 by Clare M No Comments Before we had the change in our weather after Tropical Cyclone Ilsa we had months of isolated showers and the Great Northern Highway to the south of Broome was an excellent location to observe both White-winged Black Terns and Whiskered Terns The Terns were quite content loafing on the highway and flying off when the limited traffic approached as you can see above . We did not get the huge flocks of locusts this year like we did in 2021 This resulted in no large flocks of Oriental Pratincoles in the area during the past few months and less Terns than in other years when there have been more locusts

I was very happy with this route , but wanted to take my remaining time searching for a marsh or beach with water-loving birds . The bicycle path supposedly leads to a beach named Playa Linda Lovely Beach but the route turned out to be too long for me to walk to , round-trip , in the tropical heat , so I returned to my parked car and attempted to find someplace marshy by driving . Eventually , I ended up at a river’s mouth called

When we get these very big tides we don’t go to the coast until the ocean starts to recede and then the shorebirds are more relaxed . As the big tides push up the shorebirds have to keep moving and they are unsettled , but once the tide turns they are more relaxed . The header photo shows the bay in between the lighthouse at Gantheaume Point and Cable Beach The ocean had been right up to the bottom of the cliffs and was receding . rapidly Gantheaume Point an hour after high tide You can’t easily access much of
